Secrets of being vegan!

They say that your vibe attracts your tribe and in the It Girl camp we have all sorts of ladies, we’ve got our yoga goers, our party poppers,  our dance class divas, our modelesque ladies, our travellers (jealous), our teachers, our show girls & our foodies!

So with all our different traits, star signs & aspirations we of course also have completely varied dietary palettes!

We have 5 Vegans & 5 Veggies in our gang at any given time! Talk about saving the world, we’re warrior princesses!

So seeing as we couldn’t possibly do ‘Dry January’  I’ve put together a little handy guide for surviving VEGANUARY

 

  • SNACKS AWAY

If you’ve gone cold turkey (excuse the pun) then the hardest thing will be your habits, stopping at the corner shop for a chocolate bar, or grabbing a sandwich. The best thing to do is have some bits in your bag just incase. As healthy or naughty as you want….check out accidentlyveganuk on Instagram for some ideas and things you wouldn’t expect you’d be allowed.

Did someone say oreos!

 

  • EATING OUT

Eating out used to be a nightmare, you’d feel like the most awkward person in the world let alone on the table however 2017 is seeing such a rise in Veganism that the big chain restaurants are catering for us!

Check out All Bar One, Pret, Zizzi, Pizza Express, Leon, Las iguanas, wagamamas to name a few!

M&S have also just had a whole new range for 2017 so you’ll never be stuck.

 

  • PROTEIN DEBUNKED

Meat isn’t the only protein option….face splats into palm!

You may be surprised to know you only need 10-15% of your energy from protein each day, and it can all come from plant-based foods.

You can get protein from nuts, beans, pulses, lentils, tempeh, veggies, alternative milks, grains like quinoa, cous cous, rice.

A lot of leading athletes are now Vegan and say it has improved their health, body and performance….David Hayes is a boxer, Serena Williams a formidable tennis player and I don’t think anyone would question if they get enough protein!

 

  • SHOP TIL YOU DROP

My eyes were totally opened in the supermarket, for so long I would run in grab the same bits & make the same dishes. It’s crazy how inspiring it can be ‘Vegan (supermarket finds) UK’ on Facebook is super handy for new bits and you’ll notice how much cheaper and varied your weekly shop can be.

Jus Rol is Vegan and don’t worry you can still have pizza, garlic bread, cheese and ice-cream!

….oh and even Hellmans is doing an egg free mayo!…..change is coming!

 

  • RESEARCH

As crazy as its sound if you’ve never looked into the mass farming industry, milk industry or fur industry then you’ll be quite shocked with what you see. Its like jumping down Alice in Wonderlands rabbits hole. I personally find it fascinating and yes it can be hard to read or watch some of the documentaries however with each year that goes by we learn and we grow as a planet. I recommend watching COWSPIRACY for the environment (thanks Leo Di Cap) ‘Forks over Knives’ for health benefits and EARTHLINGS for humanitarian reasons. If you’re struggling with keeping up for the month then watch one of these.

  • DON’T QUIT

So you accidentally ate something that contained eggs or milk……or a whole Chicken! Don’t worry, no one is judging you, just because you had a slip up you can get straight back on it, you’re doing a really good thing.

Any change however little is amazing!

 

  • INSPIRATION –  THERES AN APP FOR THAT!

I’m no Nigella in the kitchen but handy apps like Deliciously Ella, Hippie Lane & Happy Cow are really inspiring and have easy recipes or if you want a book I recommend The Happy Pear.

If you’ve worked your way through all that then search on instagram, I find myself drooling most days and dreaming of hiring a personal chef!

 

  • DON’T QUIT PT 2

Liam and Chris Hemsworth are vegan…..just saying ladies!

 

  • SWAT UP ON SUPPLEMENTS

If you’re as bad as I am then you’ll never remember to take your vitamins however I can’t recommend Vitamin B12 enough. For all the other know how visit www.vegansociety.com/shop/supplements.

 

  • TELL YOUR FAMILY & FRIENDS

Yes like mine they might roll their eyes, but actually talking about it helps you keep it up. You never know it might inspire them or if you’ve made something really tasty that you’re proud of then you’ll want to share it. Most importantly it doesn’t need to be taboo you should be proud you’re doing a good thing and I’m sure they’ll admire you for that.

I hope this helps a little or at the very least has been interesting ……..if you are doing Veganuary then I wish you lots of luck, if you’re currently tucking into a burger then good for you too! Totally understand it’s not for every one I’d never judge and I’m sure you do your own good things for the planet even if its spreading smiles and positivity the world needs more of that!
